Life's a chess game

| filed under:

LIFE is akin to at least a three dimensional chess game in complexity. How exciting! What a challenge! So how do we play, productively, safely and joyfully? How do we survive? How do we cope? How do we prosper?....

Chess is apparently the most complicated game humans play. Despite the fact that there are only 32 pieces in 6 shapes, 64 squares, two colours and a board that is two dimensional, there are more possible variations in the play than there are atoms on the planet! Imagine the exponential affect of increasing the size of the board by just one more row of squares.

But LIFE is at least a three dimensional chess game – each piece is unique, capable of very different ‘moves’, each one endowed with human characteristics – attitudes, personality, competence, feelings. Each one has a mind of it’s own.  Different ages, different experiences, different values.  An infinite number of squares, of pieces, of colours, of characters – all with real fears, real needs – especially for love.

The queen may have a headache and not feel like being moved; the king may prefer to go on a long walk; the castles may choose to go on the diagonal and a pious bishop would surely prefer to go straight! Even the lowly pawns may be too frightened to move forward in case they get eaten alive.

What exciting complexity!  What a challenge!
