Journeys
Information, Trust, Energy and Leadership
We create new shared definitions of four key words - information, trust, energy and leadership - and examine carefully whether they are finite or infinite concepts. Or perhaps both? We talk about paradox - that two apparently opposite truths can live in the same space.
Using the simple causal logic of Stephen Covey's SEE - DO - GET model which suggests that the way we see things determines how we behave and how we behave shapes the outcomes - we look at outcomes and how to improve them. The answers lie in the pictures we have and not in the behaviours. So the whole program is about re-examining the pictures by which we live.
We cast new light on old pictures. We re-examine the pictures that have driven capitalism and Keynesian economics - the pictures of the world promoted by the Old Scientists - the pictures of humans as machines in an unrelenting war against one another for the survival of the fittest, of scarcity and of superiority of the few over the many. A world in which only power works.
We juxtapose their pictures that have had such a powerful impact upon our Western world with pictures that we have inherited in Africa. The pictures of Ubuntu - abundance and interconnectedness, of Indaba - the process of enabling vision to emerge participatively, of Seriti - the journey towards becoming real as individuals, and networking which is so much a part of African behaviour, so instinctive and natural that there isn't a word for it. We share these words with Africans who confirm their deep meaning and significance.
We immerse ourselves in Nature and see and feel what it has to teach: the interconnectedness and interdependence of every part of Nature, large and small; the amazing orderliness and lack of any need for control. There is no boss - it is a perfect self-regulating system. It works without hierarchies and rulebooks - just a handful of basic principles. Nature teaches us that everything is connected; that every single thing is unique and different and only survives because it has a specific role to play in the greater scheme of things; that energy is the life force and information a constant source of newness; and that the real issue is not the survival of the individual but rather the survival of the species. The question that keeps emerging is: Why is man out of step with Nature?
We familiarise ourselves with the exciting work of the New Scientists. Using more powerful research technology and techniques - accelerators, computers, microscopes, telescopes, and related scientific disciplines - these scientists have challenged the Old Scientists. They tell us that the world is not mechanistic, nor limited, but bursting with infinite possibilities.
We consider Chaos Theory and Quantum Mechanics, Evolutionary Biology and Field Theory at a level deep enough to see that the pictures they draw resonate with Old African culture and with Nature. Together they challenge, at an absolutely fundamental level, the pictures that have driven the way the developed Western world behaves and which have brought the planet close to the brink of disaster.
We familiarise ourselves with the immense possibilities of simple fractals - the patterns that shape life. We believe there is great value in working anywhere in the system to bring about change. Small actions repeated regularly can bring about major change; it is not always necessary to use drastic measures.
We keep matching theory with the practical issues of daily living.
We consider the simple paradox of the apple : it is easy to count the number of seeds in an apple, but it is not so easy to count the number of apples in a seed. As leaders we have to be able to do both …….. really well.
Throughout the program, in all the experiences we share, in all the debates that flourish in the rich diversity of the group, we feel the impact of trust and information. In particular, we experience the impact of trusted information on positive human energy. We practice leadership over and over again, but a different, much simpler leadership - the leadership of human energy, not leadership using power and control.
Our symbol is a spiral. We show how to create spirals of energy using space, stretch, synergy and support. The commonplace support mechanisms of pyramids are compared with the alternatives, particularly networks, and we experience both.
On the journey we become acutely aware of huge energy wastage in our own lives and in the relationships around us, and in the organisations we manage. We call these "energy traps". We waste energy trying to be whom we are not, to conform or to please. We waste energy competing with one another. We squander energy on control and controlling. We worry and concern consumes us all, at times. So does the anger trap. All of us seem to be conditioned by urgency rather than importance. On our journey we see simple ways out of traps in which we may have been imprisoned for most of our lives.
With new infinite energy pictures and huge amounts of energy released by springing from the traps that have inhibited it, we are in a position to consider the exciting concept of a Quantum Leap - for ourselves as individuals, for our relationships with our life partner, for our families and our organisations. Perhaps even our communities, our country, our world. The group becomes excited and challenged.
A Quantum Leap is not a linear improvement; not just a better way of doings things; not just a particularly good year - but a transformation, a revolution, a completely new mountain to climb, wonderful new possibilities, a whole harvest of apples.
When Nelson Mandela chose to forgive and reconcile rather than exercise his newly won power to punish and call for retribution - that was a Quantum Leap. It was an absolutely extraordinary experience after years of a tragic history. And we find as we talk about the concept that we all know stories of individuals and families in our community who have done things that have changed the world around them. Wonderful things that we sometimes wished we had done. We all leave the program with a different, much more exciting purpose and simple tools to work with.
We define leadership in one easy sentence but we make the experience profound. We have put much careful thought into the process. You will be close to Nature; close to an extraordinary diverse group of people, and close to the real you - without any attempt to embarrass or manipulate you in any way.
You will see familiar things differently and you will see things you have never seen before. You will see the furthest stars. You will truly hear silence and the throb of drums. You will taste Africa, smell Nature, and touch your own potential gently. You will be active and busy - early starts and long days of learning. But, you will have more spare time for yourself than you have enjoyed in years. You will be wonderfully comfortable physically but at times painfully stretched intellectually as you grapple with new pictures and new possibilities.
You will want to share the experience with everyone who matters in your life. You will wish you had them with you!
